The history of the sugar bowl dates back to the middle of the 19th century, when cane sugar imported from abroad was used for sweetening. It was an exclusive and expensive item, and because of its uniqueness it had to be protected from theft. Silver or plated sugar bowls with padlocks were best suited for this purpose.

It was tasteful to have several sugar bowls at home, each for a different occasion. Of course, silver or silver-plated accessories were the most admired, because they symbolized wealth, a high level of dining culture, and were, just like today, an investment and a guarantee of wealth. The sugar bowl model designed by Alfons and Józef Fraget (hence "fragetka") is still produced today.
