PANTONE color of the year 2022 is VERY PERI

A new Pantone color whose bold presence encourages personal ingenuity and creativity.

The Pantone Color of the Year for 2022 is Very Peri (Pantone #17-3938), which combines blue hues with a purple-red undertone. Very Peri is not purple—it’s a fun, futuristic “dynamic periwinkle blue with an invigorating purple-red undertone,” Pantone posted on Instagram, and it’s meant to encourage creativity and “imaginative expression.”

Pantone said it "combines the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red."

Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, explains:

“We live in a time of transformation. Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri is symbolic of the global zeitgeist and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our perceptions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives are connecting in new ways.” Eiseman goes on to explain that Very Peri represents “the nexus of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are manifesting in the physical world and vice versa.”

For the first time in Pantone Color of the Year history, a newly created color has been chosen as the Color of the Year. “ This reflects global innovation and ongoing transformation,” explains the Pantone Color Institute. “As society understands color as a critical form of communication and a way to express and influence thoughts and emotions, to engage and connect, the complexity of the new red and purple-blue hue highlights the vast possibilities that lie ahead.”

Very Peri "illustrates the creativity and ingenuity often found in the world of digital design and art," Pantone posted on Instagram.

Very Peri “exemplifies ‘carefree confidence and bold curiosity… and opens us to a new vision of how we rewrite our lives,’” Pantone says.

It is also intended to rekindle gratitude – and cast the future in a new light.
