BOTTEGA VIGNOLI: designer vases and bowls from Italian majolica

Exciting, unprecedented and experimental – that is BOTTEGA VIGNOLI – a ceramic workshop where art and craft become one. This manufactory was founded in 1976 by the sisters Saura and Ivana Vignoli. It is located in the city of Faenza , one of the most representative ceramic production centers in Italy.
The tradition of pottery production in Faenza dates back to the Middle Ages, when the name of the city gave its name to the typical Faience tableware. Already during the 16th century, Faenza defined its own style, which combines the culture of the time, a mixture of Byzantine, Roman, Eastern and Islamic elements.

The ceramic creations of the Vignoli sisters, however, go far beyond local tradition. Their products are unique and instantly recognizable. They are characterized by the shimmering colors, iridescent reflections and unique design of Faenza ceramics.

The production process begins with the extraction of clay in pieces, which are then exposed to rain and cold to wash away solid impurities. After cleaning, the clay is chopped and brought back to a plastic state. It is now ready to be shaped into vases, bowls and dishes on a lathe. Once the process is complete, the product is fired in a kiln at 960°C. The terracotta piece is then ready to be decorated with colours in the form of a dust formed from metal oxides.

Last but not least , the piece undergoes reduction firing, an original firing technique in which fine metal oxides used for decoration precipitate on the surface, creating an endless array of shimmering colors and iridescent effects that make each object an original masterpiece.
